Juliane Etima

Juliane Etima, BSc. M.A is the Director responsible for Psychosocial Support Services at MU-JHU. She is a Counseling Psychologist and Qualitative Researcher/Investigator with extensive experience in the provision of social, emotional, and educational support; and innovations for empowerment and equity for children, youth, women and their families infected and affected by HIV and AIDS.

She is a Behavioral Scientist with Master’s level training in Counseling Psychology and alumni of the CDC/MakSPH (Centers for Disease Control – Makerere University School of Public Health) 2 year HIV/AIDS fellowship program where she trained in HIV/AIDS program management and Advanced Qualitative research methods. She has training in Global Mental Health from the University of Washington US.

Over the years Ms. Etima has developed a structured yet flexible program to mentor and support ‘Young Generation Alive’ (a group for young people living and affected by HIV) and has piloted and developed several interventions and evaluations to support young people living with HIV to achieve their full potential. She spear led the use of the validated scales among the target population using Audio Computer-Assisted SI (ACASI) and implementing and analyzing qualitative research among adolescents and health providers.

She also led the behavioural component for the ‘Health Improvements for Teen Ugandans’ study that is funded by NIH and she has led the site-level implementation of the behavioural components for two major microbicide trials ‘VOICE’ and ‘ASPIRE’ (Microbicide Trials Network studies funded by NIH). She has also been the Investigator of Record for the Gates-funded, Nanofiber Fabric study, and the MTN 032, MTN 041 and HPTN 084-02 studies. She was the protocol co-chair and IoR of the MTN 045 study, and Co-investigator for the PROMOTing Adherence to life-long ART (PROMOTA) Study.
